HONORING OUR PAST. INSPIRING WHAT’S NEXT

The Canonsburg Educational and Cultural Institute (CECI) was established in 2021 with a vision to enrich lives through arts, culture, and learning while creating new opportunities for connection and creativity across Canonsburg, Washington County, and the surrounding region.

To bring this vision to life, CECI acquired the former Canonsburg Middle School, a 5.6-acre campus encompassing approximately 150,000 square feet of space which includes the log cabin that gave birth to Jefferson College, the first such institution west of the Alleghenies. Once a place of learning for generations, the facility now stands ready to be reimagined as a dynamic destination for community engagement.

As a completely volunteer, 501c3 nonprofit organization, CECI is transforming the campus into a vibrant cultural hub where people of all ages can gather, learn, create, and be inspired. The first phase of this transformation is the restoration of the historic 1931 auditorium, which will reopen as the Canon Theatre this fall, bringing new energy to a cherished community landmark.

Future phases will expand the campus into a multi-use center for arts, education, and community life, with a targeted opening in 2027. Together, these effort will create a lasting resource that celebrates Canonsburg’s heritage while shaping its cultural future.
